What is a Mala?

A mala bead necklace (or mala bracelet) is a string of beads traditionally used to count mantras while meditating. One mantra (prayer) is recited as your finger moves along each bead. A mala necklace can also be worn to align one with their spiritual journey.

The word "mala" is the Sanskrit word for “garland.” Interestingly, the word “bead” comes from the Anglo-Saxon word “bede” - which translates to “prayer”!

Mala bead necklaces, sometimes called prayer beads, are loaded with symbolism.

When It Comes to Malas, Numbers Count

Malas traditionally have 108 beads because 108 is a sacred number in numerous world cultures and traditions, including Hinduism and Buddhism.

In Hinduism, 108 represents the wholeness of the universe. In Buddhism, there are 108 mortal desires that impede enlightenment. Yogis practice a sequence of 108 Sun Salutations. There is even profound astronomical significance to the number 108!

There are also mala beads - for example, bracelets - that may have 27 or 54 beads, or any multiple of 9.

In a 108 mala bead necklace, "marker" beads are often added to the 108 to help one keep track of the count during prayers, as well as acting as a nice visual break in the bead pattern. They are typically placed after bead numbers 27, 54, and 81.

The Guru Bead

The 109th bead is known as the “guru” bead (aka “meru” bead or “mountain” bead). The guru bead represents our greatest teacher and holds our prayers and intentions.

Mala necklaces are often finished with a tassel, which hangs below the guru bead. The tassel represents our connection to spirit. Alternately, they may be finished with a talisman or amulet.

When using a mala necklace for meditation, start by holding your guru bead and setting your intention. Then say your mantras (or focus on your breath/pranayama) as you pass each bead along between your fingers. When you return to the guru bead, finish your practice by expressing gratitude to your teacher!
