What is Shungite? Benefits, Uses & EMF Protection

Valerie Burke

Shungite is a rare, carbon-based mineral found only in Karelia, Russia, dating back more than 2 billion years. It is best known for its ability to neutralize the harmful effects of EMFs (electromagnetic frequencies) and its unique molecular structure, which contains naturally occurring fullerenes — hollow carbon molecules with powerful antioxidant properties.

What is Shungite Made Of?

Shungite is composed of dozens of minerals and elements, with carbon as its primary component. What makes it extraordinary is that some of that carbon exists as fullerenes — hollow, soccer ball-shaped molecular structures found nowhere else in the natural mineral kingdom. The different grades of shungite (Type 1 Elite, Type 2, Type 3) are distinguished by their carbon content, with Elite shungite containing the highest concentration.

What Are the Benefits of Shungite?

Shungite has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, and detoxifying properties. For centuries, Russians have used it to support everything from skin conditions and digestive health to immunity and stress. Its most celebrated modern benefit is EMF protection — transforming the wave forms of manmade electromagnetic radiation into frequencies more compatible with the human body.

How Does Shungite Protect from EMFs?

Shungite doesn't block or absorb EMFs — it transforms them. Its unique molecular structure changes the wave form of manmade EMFs so their damaging biological effects are neutralized, making them more like Earth's natural fields, which our bodies are designed to handle. This is why shungite is particularly valued by people with electrohypersensitivity (EHS).

How Can Shungite Be Used?

Shungite can be worn as jewelry, placed around your home or workplace, or used to make shungite-infused water. To maximize EMF protection, it helps to have shungite both on your person and in the rooms where you spend the most time — creating what I call a "double shield of protection." Start small and add pieces as your budget allows.

Where Does Shungite Come From?

Shungite is found in only one location on Earth — the Zazhoginsky deposit in Karelia, Russia, near the western shore of Lake Onega on the Russian-Finnish border. Its supply is finite — based on current mining rates, higher grades are becoming increasingly rare and prices have risen accordingly, especially for Elite (Type 1) shungite and larger pieces.

❓Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my shungite have flecks, specks, and lines in it? Is it fake?

This is completely normal and actually a sign of authenticity! Shungite is a natural mineral containing dozens of elements — including iron, pyrite, quartz, and other minerals — which appear as silver or gold flecks, white veins, and irregular markings. Perfectly uniform, solid black shungite is more likely to be fake than the real thing. Genuine shungite is beautifully imperfect.

Is shungite a crystal?

Shungite is technically a mineraloid, not a crystal — it lacks a crystalline structure. It is carbon-based, like graphite, coal and diamond, but its molecular composition and properties are entirely unique.

How do I know if my shungite is real?

Authentic shungite conducts electricity — you can test it with a simple multimeter. At Shungite Queen, all shungite is tested for authenticity before it reaches you.

What is Elite shungite?

Elite shungite (also called Type 1, Noble shungite or silver shungite) is the highest grade, containing up to 98% carbon and the greatest concentration of fullerenes. It has a distinctive silvery luster and is rarer and more expensive than regular black shungite.

Can shungite get wet?

As a stone, shungite can get wet without damage. However, shungite jewelry should be kept dry — water can seep into bead holes and degrade cording or dull polished surfaces. Remove shungite jewelry before showering or swimming.
