If you've been following me for a while, you already know I have a number of articles about the adverse effects of EMFs (electromagnetic frequencies). Abundant evidence now exists for wide-ranging injurious effects, particularly to our neurological and immune systems. But that's not all - EMF is a proverbial wrecking ball for bone health.

Over the past couple years, I've written two articles about osteoporosis. As with many things, I was prompted by my own bone health crisis, which I detailed in my first article (January 2025).

As a nurse who had focused on nutrition and natural health for most of her professional life, I was humbled and rather dispirited by my own bone health issue. But I viewed it as one of those big life learning experiences and faced it head-on - and my results have been successful beyond my wildest expectations! That was the focus of my second article in March 2026.

Now I feel like it's time I connect the dots for you about the effects of EMF on bones, in a more comprehensive way. So, let's dive in!

There are four primary ways EMFs adversely affect our bones. In this article, we will look at each of these individually.

  • Lowering bone mineral density (BMD) by disrupting VGCCs (voltage gated calcium channels) on outer cell membranes

Can EMFs Cause Osteoporosis?

Electromagnetic frequencies are particularly damaging to electrical systems in our body, such as our heart and brain. Thanks to the work of Dr. Martin Pall and others, we now understand the reason for this. (Pall M, 2013)

Many cells that comprise our body's electrical systems have special channels on their membranes that help regulate the flow of calcium ions into and out of the cell. These are called voltage gate calcium channels, or VGCCs.

To date, these VGCC effects appear to be the most significant mechanism for how EMFs damage biological systems.

The oscillating or pulsing nature of manmade EMFs wreaks havoc on your VGCCs by overriding your body's innate electrical signals and physically forcing these voltage sensors open. This results in a rapid influx of calcium into the cell, which produces a cascade of calamitous consequences.

The flood of intracellular calcium ions triggers chemical reactions that damage proteins, enzymes, and important cellular structures such as mitochondria - as well as producing a torrent of free radicals that trigger DNA damage and stem cell mutations. The body responds to this increased oxidative stress with chronic inflammation.

You can understand, then, why chronic exposure is so profoundly detrimental to your health!

The downstream effects of EMFs include immune system dysregulation, neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, developmental problems, infertility, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, brain tumors, sleep disorders and a boatload of other nastiness.

You might be wondering what this has to do with your bones. I mean, they're not part of any electrical system...

Or are they?

⚡️ It turns out that our bones are piezoelectric - meaning, they generate an electrical charge when subject to any mechanical stress.

Just like quartz and other natural crystals, your bones have a crystalline structure that produces electricity every time you walk, run, jump, or move in any way. As a result, they have VGCCs just like your heart, muscles and sensory organs. It follows that bone cells are directly impacted by EMFs, which includes the stem cells that mature into bone.

How do EMFs Affect None Density?

Bones are highly responsive to electromagnetic fields. The type, frequency, and application of the EMF are what determine if that energy field will have beneficial or harmful effects.

For example, PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic fields) is a relatively well known tool for improving bone density because it can stimulate osteoblasts. However, chronic exposure to non-optimal frequencies - like from smart meters, cell phones, and WIFI routers - has been shown to demineralize bone.

  • A 2016 study (Kunt, et al) involving electrical workers showed that long-term exposure to electrical wires is associated with diminished bone density and elevated oxidative stress, as well as impaired thyroid function.
  • In his 2011 study, Dr. Fernando Saraví discovered asymmetrical hip mineralization among healthy adult male cell phone users, concluding that cell phones may adversely affect bone mineralization.

How Does EMF Exposure Affect Bone Marrow?

Your bones do much more than serving as a structural scaffold for your body. The bone marrow produces 95 percent of your blood cells (red and white blood cells and platelets), as well as manufacturing all of your bone-building and remodeling cells, those osteoblasts and osteoclasts.

Bone marrow is chockfull of stem cells. With chronic exposure to EMFs, those newly maturing stem cells are being zapped senseless. We are not even close to knowing the extent of the effects of this bone marrow EMF damage.

Several meta-analyses report significant associations between EMF exposure and risk of leukemia, a cancer of the blood and bone marrow. (Carpenter D, 2019)

Leukemia starts with DNA mutations in the bone marrow, which means blood cells cannot develop or function normally. This is of special concern with our children. Nearly all government or independent studies find a statistically significant association between EMF exposure and childhood leukemia.

Can EMFs Impair Thyroid Function?

Thyroid balance is essential for proper bone metabolism. Growing evidence suggests that prolonged microwave and radiofrequency radiation is linked to measurable shifts in thyroid hormone levels. It also increases risk for thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer. (Tsiang A, 2022)

How Do EMFs Impact Melatonin Production?

Besides being an underappreciated antioxidant, melatonin protects bone health by stimulating new bone formation and reducing bone breakdown - which is why it is one of the most commonly used supplements for managing bone loss. (Karasu S, 2022)

Decades of research confirms that nighttime exposure to EMFs diminishes the body's melatonin production. Yet, people continue to sleep with their WIFI on - with their devices in the bedroom and often right next to the bed. This means they are sleeping all night in unhealthy electromagnetic fields, during the precise period when their body should be undergoing detox and self-repair.

So, what can you do?

Get Educated About EMFs

Start reading. You've made it this far so you've already started!

Educate yourself until you begin to understand the magnitude of the issue. It is insidious and silent, therefore easy to ignore - unless you are one of the “canaries in the coal mine” who are highly EMF sensitive.

There are four general areas of concern: radiofrequency waves, microwaves, electromagnetic frequencies, and dirty electricity. Electromagnetic frequencies are a complex topic that can feel overwhelming, but excellent resources exist online. You don't have to become an expert on EMFs - just learn enough to understand what you're dealing with so you can make practical, effective interventions.

Evaluate Your Risk

The best way to evaluate EMF levels in your home and workplace is with an EMF meter. There are lots of consumer meters available today, and many are multifunction - meaning, they give you readings for different types of fields. Many quality consumer models are in the $150 to $200 range.

Lloyd Burrell's website ElectricSense is an excellent informational resource for EMF meters.

Even if you don't own a meter, you can get a sense of your exposure. Nearly everyone has electrical wiring in their home, and most have elevated electromagnetic fields. There is also dirty electricity coming from electrical wiring, which is a separate issue.

Ask yourself the following questions:

📌 Is there a cell phone tower right outside your door?

📌 Does your house have a smart meter?

📌 Do you spend a lot of time on electronic devices for work or play?

📌 Do you own many electronic devices? How about smart devices? All those “smart” devices emit RF/microwave radiation.

📌 What rooms in your home have the most electronics?

📌 What exposures do you have in your sleeping space? This might be the most important zone to consider.

Mitigate Your Exposure

The following is a list of simple, practical ways to mitigate your EMF exposure. This list is not comprehensive, but it lays out my Top 10:

  1. Turn off WIFI at night and when not in use; unplug devices because they emit EMF even when turned off
  2. Minimize time spent in front of electronic devices
  3. Avoid electronic devices in your bedroom
  4. When it comes to EMFs, distance is your friend; the more space you put between the device and you, the better - just a few millimeters can reduce your exposure 1000-fold!
  5. Avoid carrying your phone in your pocket; consider an EMF-protective phone case that deflects radiation away from the body
  6. Use speaker phone or an air tube headset; take advantage of Airplane Mode
  7. Use protective shielding such as device covers, paints, fabrics and others
  8. Add some shungite to your life. Shungite works differently from shielding because it does not block EMFs but “transforms” them, neutralizing their damaging effects. Shungite makes manmade EMFs more similar to the earth's natural electromagnetic fields, which are compatible with our bodies.
