Shungite is classified into three types based on its carbon content, which directly affects its appearance and properties. Understanding these differences is key to identifying genuine stones.

Type I (Elite, Noble, Silver Shungite): This is the rarest and most potent form, containing up to 99% carbon. It has a striking silvery-gray color with a highly reflective, metallic luster. Elite shungite is very fragile, cannot be polished or shaped, and is typically sold in its raw, nugget-like form. It is the most conductive type.

Type II (Black Shungite): This is the most common type with a carbon content of 50-70%. It has a deep gray or black color with a matte, non-reflective finish. Because it is more durable, it's the type used to make pyramids, spheres, cubes, bricks, beads and most jewelry. It often contains visible inclusions of other minerals like quartz or pyrite, appearing as veins or specks.

Type III (Gray Shungite or Shungite Rock): Containing 30-50% carbon, this type has a gray color and a dull luster. It is less commonly used for EMF protection or water purification due to its lower carbon and fullerene content.

Shungite registers 3.5 to 4.0 on the Mohs scale of hardness, making it a relatively soft, fragile stone. It can be scratched easily by harder materials like quartz, steel, or even a copper penny. If a stone marketed as shungite is unusually hard, that's a red flag.

Many people are surprised when they pick up a piece for the first time — it feels much lighter than expected. If a black stone feels unusually dense or heavy for its size, it is likely not shungite.

Authentic shungite is found only in the Karelia region of Russia from the Zazhoginsky deposit. The stone was formed more than 2 billion years ago from ancient organic deposits, however the exact geological forces that created shungite's unique molecular structure and fullerenes remains unknown. Some believe the carbon formation was struck by a meteorite. Stones from locations other than Karelia being sold as "shungite" will not have this unique structure and composition and will not, therefore, have its unique properties.

Knowing your shungite supplier is one of the most reliable authenticity checks available. Before purchasing, look at reviews, "about" pages, how long the company has been in business, and who recommends them. A reputable vendor will be transparent about sourcing, their company and their credentials. Exercise the same due diligence you would for any significant purchase.

▲ How Do You Test Shungite for Electrical Conductivity?

Knowing what shungite looks like is only a starting point. The only definitive way to verify shungite's authenticity is with an electrical conductivity test.

Shungite is unique in the mineral kingdom because it actually conducts electricity — a property shared only by certain metallic ores, none of which resemble shungite. There are two easy methods:

  1. Flashlight Test: Find a flashlight with its switch on the back end. Unscrew the cap to expose the battery and inner casing. Use your shungite to connect the battery's contact point with the flashlight casing. If the flashlight turns on, your shungite is conducting electricity and is authentic. This test takes a little practice and works best with the right size and shape of stone.
  2. Multimeter Test: Set a multimeter to measure resistance (ohms, Ω). Touch both the red and black probes to different points on your stone. Genuine shungite will complete the circuit and show a resistance reading anywhere from near zero to several hundred ohms. The exact number will vary based on the stone's size and type. It is common for the numbers to dance around. If the multimeter display does not change or shows infinite resistance (often displayed as 'OL' or '1'), the stone is not conductive and is not shungite.

The multimeter test is the easier of the two, but you do need an ohmmeter or multimeter to measure electrical resistance. You may already have one in your garage — it's a common gadget. If not, they're available on Amazon for around $20–$30.

▲ What Are Common Shungite Fakes?

Fake shungite is a stone comprised of other black minerals, or even glass. Sometimes a stone falsely claimed to be shungite is simply misidentified, whereas other times it is intentional because other materials are cheaper to source. Common counterfeits include the following (and they will all fail an electrical conductivity test):

  • Black Tourmaline (Schorl): While a legitimate crystal, it is not shungite. It is much heavier and harder than shungite.
  • Hematite: This iron-based mineral is very dense and heavy, a clear giveaway compared to lightweight shungite. It also has a distinct metallic, almost greasy feel and will not conduct electricity in the same way.
  • Obsidian/Black Glass: This material will be very smooth, often with a glassy luster, and may have conchoidal fractures (curved, shell-like breaks). It will feel harder and colder to the touch than shungite.
  • Coal/Anthracite: While carbon-based, these materials are typically lighter and more brittle than shungite and lack its unique fullerene structure.

▲ Are Certificates of Authenticity Reliable?

In today's world of easy fakes and fraud, a certificate of authenticity carries far less weight than it once did — especially if it was issued by the seller rather than an independent laboratory. An unscrupulous vendor could print a certificate themselves or download one from another website to accompany their wares.
