❓Why the Canvas Pouch?

It has been difficult to find shungite pads or pillows. My former supplier no longer exists, and the one before that. When I ordered these new ones - which, like all shungite, came all the way over from Russia - they were sooooo dusty from shungite powder! I thought they were going to be unusable.

I was so disappointed because I've been searching for pads for a couple years now, and I really wanted to find a usable solution. I think the canvas they use is not a tight enough weave to block that very fine powder that shungite naturally sheds. Making matters worse, the covers that came with these pads were not really covers but sleeves - open at the ends. Not much help!

So, what to do?

First, I washed the sleeves to remove all the powder that had collected. Not a permanent solution but it tamed the issue a little bit.

Next, I searched for the best way to encase the pad - to make it usable next to our clothing and furniture. Finding a suitable material in a close enough size was NOT an easy task! Oh vey...

Eventually, I struck gold with these "banker's pouches" which are heavy canvas, and they zip up. They are a tad too large but not a huge deal as the extra couple inches can be folded under. I figured it was better to have that than to not offer shungite pads, which are beloved by so many and constantly requested. It works pretty well, as long as you don't involve it in a pillow fight.

So, now you have the story behind the canvas pouches. 😆

WARNING: Should you decide to remove the shungite pad from the canvas pouch (to wash the pouch or whatever), do it outside if possible, and be prepared to get black powder all over your hands. Your fingers will get black - I guarantee! It's quite messy.

Shungite Care

Shungite Care

Shungite requires little in terms of care. There are just a few precautions due to shungite's being a soft stone, especially when it comes to shungite jewelry. Here are a few tips and guidelines.

👉🏽 How do I care for my shungite?

Shungite does not require much care. If a solid piece of shungite is dusty or soiled, it can be rinsed under water and wiped dry, or just cleaned with a soft cloth. Shungite is a very soft stone so will scratch easily.

👉🏽 Can I get my shungite wet?

Shungite stone itself can get wet, but it is best to keep shungite jewelry dry to extend the life as much as possible. Leather and various metal findings are adversely affected by repeated exposures to water.

👉🏽 Why does my shungite have little gold specs and lines in it?

Shungite is made of literally dozens of minerals and elements, such as quartz and pyrite. These often appear as gold or white dots, specs, lines, etc. and are completely normal. In fact, it's rare to see plain black or gray shungite. In when used in jewelry, these inclusions can get shinier with wear.

👉🏽 Is it normal for shungite to shed black powder?

Yes! this is completely normal and is usually temporary. A solid stone can be rinsed in water, which can reduce shedding.

👉🏽 How do I know this is genuine shungite?

We source our shungite only from reliable sources in Karelia, Russia with whom we’ve had outstanding long-term business relationships. Every batch is tested for authenticity. Read here to learn how to test shungite yourself at home.
